The conclusion first: supper at Zhongyuan runs in two layers.
The stall layer is on Shijian Rd and starts closing around eleven; the shop layer is on Daren 2nd St and Xinzhongbei Rd and closes one to two hours later. Join the two, and you have the full picture of late-night eating around Chung Yuan University.

Ten o’clock: the Shijian Rd stalls at full strength
Chung Yuan University’s main gate is at No. 200 Zhongbei Rd; Shijian Rd runs out from the gate and is the market’s spine. Fried chicken, hot braised snacks, grilled skewers, thin noodles, sweet soup — the categories are as stable as the earlier supper map described; stall names stay unnamed, as before, because they turn over too fast for anything written this year to hold next year.
Prices are set by students: fried chicken around NT$60-120 a portion, braised snacks under NT$200, sweet soup about NT$50, posted prices rule. Ten to eleven is the densest hour, Friday and Saturday above all — follow whichever queue is longest.
Weekdays and weekends differ a lot. Ten on a Tuesday night in term time, Shijian Rd is walkable; ten on a Friday, you cannot wheel a scooter through the lanes.
Half past eleven: the stalls close, the shops take over
Most stalls pack up between eleven and midnight; on weekends some hold to half past twelve. Still hungry after that, you move to the shops.
The building at No. 256 Shijian Rd holds two of them: on the ground floor, Zhaojiu Wanwu (朝酒晚舞), an izakaya with five stars from 180-plus reviews; upstairs, AL.CO. Bistro (AL.CO.餐酒館 (傲客 佳人)), 4.7 stars from 250-plus, under five minutes’ walk from the market. Toward Xinzhongbei Rd, Hedanting Skewer Bar (鶴丹亭 串燒酒場) at No. 482 has 4.9 stars from 500-plus reviews and the word supper written into its own listing; Haiye Bistro (海耶 原式餐酒館) inside Lane 469 is a different flavour, 4.6 stars.
Izakaya spend lands at NT$500-800 a head, five times the stalls. But after midnight, these are the places in Zhongyuan still cooking.
Small hours: the all-you-can-drink shops on Daren 2nd St
Daren 2nd St is about ten minutes’ walk from the gate, and two all-you-can-drink bistros carry Zhongyuan’s small hours: Zhongyuan 221 Bistro (中原貳貳壹 bistro 「暢飲專門店」) at No. 31, five stars from 2,000-plus reviews, the most reviewed bistro on Zhongli’s books; and #15Bistro (#15Bistro 拾伍號餐酒館-暢飲) at 1F, No. 15, 4.7 stars from 200-plus. LOCAL LAZE at No. 2 Daren 5th St, 4.8 stars from 700-plus, hosts many private events — on weekends, check it has not been booked out.
Drink-package prices and last-order times differ by shop; posted notices rule.
Had a drink, do not ride back to the dorm. Taxis are easy around Zhongyuan, and a designated driver is a few hundred NT.
After two: do not stay in Zhongyuan
At two a.m. Zhongyuan has nothing left. The stalls closed long ago, the izakayas are shutting, the drink shops are on their last round. If you must eat, go to the Zhongli station front, ten-odd minutes by car — the station supper piece covered it, and that side wins on one thing only: it is the latest.
Massage points the same way. On the Zhongyuan side there is only Liangren Foot Massage (良任足體推拿養身館-保健) at No. 451 Xinzhongbei Rd, 4.9 stars from 200-plus; for more to choose from, the Zhongli massage list clusters on Zhongfeng Rd and Zhongmei Rd, not the campus.
When not to make the trip
- Summer and winter break. Once the students leave, stall numbers drop by a third or more; in July and August, Shijian Rd looks empty by nine.
- Sunday nights. Class the next morning — the crowd is gone by half past ten.
- Rainy nights. The market has no canopy, and stalls close an hour earlier than usual.
- After one a.m. See above.
The first week of September is the opposite extreme: freshman check-in, club booths, parents bringing children to see the school, and Shijian Rd jams from six in the evening to eleven. For a quiet portion of fried chicken, wait until mid-September.
Getting there
Out of TRA Zhongli station, a bus from the station front toward Chung Yuan University takes about ten-odd minutes; a taxi is the same time and NT$100-something. Drivers should park on the fringe and walk in — the market lanes are narrow, and meeting another car in one is a regret.
